Parliament has held a media soirée and recognition night to honour members of the Parliamentary Press Corps for their contributions to democratic governance and public accountability.
Addressing journalists at the event, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, highlighted the media’s indispensable role in promoting transparency and accountability within Parliament. He described the press as a critical partner in democracy, serving as a bridge between lawmakers and the public they represent.
The Speaker commended the Parliamentary Press Corps for its dedication to accurate, timely and ethical reporting of parliamentary proceedings, noting that responsible journalism remains essential to building an informed citizenry. He stressed the importance of sustained collaboration between Parliament and the media to deepen public understanding of governance and legislative processes.
While reaffirming the media’s watchdog role, Mr Bagbin acknowledged the challenges journalists face, including misinformation, rapid news cycles and pressures on objectivity. He reiterated Parliament’s commitment to openness, pledging continued engagement with the media and improved public access to parliamentary information.
Concluding his remarks, the Speaker praised journalists for their creative storytelling, which he said helps simplify complex legislative issues for a wider audience. He encouraged the Press Corps to continue adapting to the evolving media landscape, particularly digital platforms, to ensure diverse voices remain part of public discourse.
During the ceremony, members of the Parliamentary Press Corps honoured the Speaker and the Clerk to Parliament for their leadership and support. Awards were also presented to journalists recognised for excellence in parliamentary reporting.
