The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced a suspension of the scheduled rollout of new licence plates from 2026.
The Authority had scheduled Friday, January 2, 2026 to roll out the new number plates, which will have Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).
DVLA had, therefore, ensured that Parliament amended the Road Traffic Act, 2004 (Act 683).
However, the successful rollout also required that the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180) was also amended.
“While Parliament successfully amended Act 683, the proposed amendments to LI 2180 were not concluded before Parliament went on recess on Friday, December 19, 2025,” a notice issued on Wednesday, December 24 said.
“Consequently, the DVLA announces the suspension of the planned rollout of the new licence plates originally scheduled for January 2, 2026.”
The Authority has announced an extended use of the current DP stickers as well as DV plates, assuring that a time limit will be communicated in due course.
“However, any vehicle owner who for one reason or the other wishes to register a vehicle in 2026 can do so at any of our regional offices, except to note that that would require re-registration when the new licence plate is rolled out.”
