The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has written to authorities at University of Ghana, Legon to reverse the reported 25 percent fee increments for the 2025/26 academic year.
According to GTEC, it had directed all publicly-funded tertiary institutions not to implement any fee increases for the 2025/26 academic year.
“Notwithstanding this directive, the Commission has been made aware that the University of Ghana has increased fees by 25% and, in certain instances, introduced new fees without prior approval from the relevant authorities as required by law,” a letter written by GTEC Director-General Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai observed.
The Commission has, therefore, instructed University of Ghana authorities to, among others, reverse any fee increases immediately, taking steps to credit all continuing students who have overpaid from the 2024/25 academic year and refunding the difference for final-year students who paid excess fees per the situation.
GTEC also instructs Ghana’s premier university to reverse all dues including SRC and GRASAG dues and suspend the introduction of new fees such as the 75th anniversary dues and the Development Levy.
“You are hereby requested to provide GTEC with evidence of compliance not later than January 12, 2026.
“Failure will result in the Commission instituting serious regulatory sanctions against the University of Ghana,” the letter to the Vice Chancellor stated.
Deputy Minister of Education Dr Clement Apaak has been named by the Commission as the liaison between the Ministry of Education and the University of Ghana over any variation to the requests.
“Should you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact him.”
