The Ghana National Fire Service has clarified circumstances surrounding a viral video circulating on social media that allegedly shows Fire Service personnel assaulting a civilian, assuring the public of full cooperation with ongoing investigations.
In a press release dated January 5, 2026, the Service said it had taken note of the footage, which has generated widespread public concern. The identities of both the firefighters and the civilian involved have not yet been established.
GNFS confirmed that the alleged assault of a journalist linked to the incident is currently under police investigation. It said the Service would cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies to establish the facts surrounding the matter.
According to the statement, the video depicts an altercation between firefighters and a suspected thief who had allegedly attacked Fire Service personnel alongside a group of accomplices at a fire scene. The Service, however, stressed that investigations were ongoing and urged the public to refrain from drawing conclusions until all facts were established.
Management of the GNFS has constituted an internal committee to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident and determine the conduct of its personnel.
While condemning attacks on its officers in the line of duty, the Service said it equally frowns on any form of physical or verbal assault on civilians by Fire Service personnel, regardless of provocation. It emphasised that professionalism and respect for human rights remain central to its operations.
The GNFS appealed to the public to remain calm and exercise restraint as both police and internal investigations continue.
The Service reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, transparency and professionalism in the discharge of its mandate, adding that it would continue to engage the media and relevant authorities to ensure accurate public information.
Further updates, the statement said, would be communicated as investigations progress.
