Manchester United are advancing plans to appoint a caretaker manager following the departure of Ruben Amorim, with former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær emerging as the clear favourite, according to reports by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The club is understood to be assessing internal and external options, but Solskjær has moved to the front of the queue after holding direct talks with United on Tuesday. The discussions were described as positive, significantly boosting the Norwegian’s chances of a return to Old Trafford.
Romano reports that Solskjær has made it clear the role is “not about the contract or the money”, insisting he is ready to help the club and prepared to accept the position at any moment.
In the interim, Darren Fletcher is expected to oversee first-team duties for the week, with former defender Jonny Evans returning as part of the backroom staff.
United are expected to appoint a high-profile permanent head coach in the summer, with the caretaker role seen as a short-term solution to stabilise the club through the remainder of the season.
