Police in Ghana’s Volta Region say they have intercepted a vehicle carrying suspected narcotic substances in what authorities describe as a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking.
In a press release dated Jan. 22, 2026, the Volta Regional Police Command said officers acting on intelligence stopped a black Liberty Jeep on the Accra–Aflao road near Kpotame, close to Sogakofe, on Wednesday, Jan. 21.
The driver, identified as Charles Adenukle, a 46-year-old Nigerian national, was arrested at the scene and is currently assisting police with investigations, the statement said.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 10 parcels of compressed substances suspected to be cocaine, each weighing about one kilogram. Police estimated the street value of the seized substances at 1,032,650 Ghana cedis. Officers also discovered about half a kilogram of compressed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp concealed behind the inner lining of the vehicle’s boot.
According to the police, the operation was led by the Volta Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Wisdom Akorli, who received actionable intelligence through the Police Intelligence Unit. He subsequently deployed a joint team drawn from the Police Intelligence Directorate, the Drug Law Enforcement Unit and the Motor Transport and Traffic Department.
The police commander commended the officers involved for what he described as professionalism, diligence and integrity, particularly praising them for refusing any attempt at an “amicable settlement” during the arrest.
“All exhibits recovered are being handled in accordance with established procedures,” the statement said, adding that the suspected narcotic substances would be forwarded to the Police Forensic Laboratory for examination and analysis.
Police said further investigations were ongoing to determine the source and intended destination of the drugs, as well as to identify any accomplices linked to the suspected trafficking operation.
The Volta Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and other forms of organised crime in the region. It also appealed to the public to continue providing credible information to support law enforcement efforts.
The statement was signed by Chief Inspector Francis Kwaku Gomado, head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Volta Regional Police.
