The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has declared every Wednesday a national Fugu-wearing day as part of efforts to promote Ghana’s rich cultural heritage. The directive, issued on 10 February 2026, encourages Ghanaians and friends of Ghana at home and abroad to wear Fugu, also known as Batakari, in all its diverse forms and designs.
The ministry said the initiative seeks to deepen cultural awareness, affirm national identity and project Ghana’s heritage with pride to the world. It forms part of government’s broader commitment to preserve, promote and celebrate indigenous traditions while boosting the creative economy.
Officials believe the weekly observance will generate social and economic benefits by empowering local weavers, designers, artisans and traders along the Fugu value chain. It is also expected to create expanded business, employment and commercial opportunities nationwide.
Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie said government hopes the collective embrace of Fugu will strengthen national unity and serve as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence and self-expression.
