Police in Ghana’s Oti Region have arrested two men after intercepting a truck allegedly transporting a firearm and hundreds of rounds of ammunition without lawful authority, authorities said.
The Oti Regional Police Intelligence Department conducted the intelligence-led operation on 8 February 2026, stopping a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GS-4677-17 that was travelling from Accra towards Kpandai in the Northern Region. Officers searched the vehicle and discovered a locally manufactured single-barrel shotgun hidden among building materials.
Police said the search also uncovered 21 boxes containing a total of 525 rounds of Lion AAA and BB ammunition concealed within the cargo. The driver, Abubakari Salam Atta, 35, and his mate, Kabuja Kwadwo Tademe, 19, were arrested at the scene. Authorities stated the two men claimed ownership of the weapon and ammunition found in the vehicle.
Both suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be arraigned before court in due course, according to a statement issued by the Regional Police Command.
The command assured the public that operations targeting illegal weapons possession and trafficking will continue, stressing its commitment to removing unauthorised firearms from communities and enhancing public safety.
