The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested four key members of a notorious carjacking syndicate, dubbed the “Duku Syndicate,” in connection with the robbery and murder of Mr. Andrews Amankwah on 10 February 2026 at Ohwim-Amanfrom, Kumasi.

The Inspector-General of Police directed a coordinated intelligence-led operation involving the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, and the CID Anti-Armed Robbery Unit. Between 18 and 22 February, the four suspects were apprehended in separate operations across Kumasi. They include Akwasi Manu (47), found with the victim’s Samsung mobile phone; Bashiru Tanko alias “TK” (33), arrested at Atonsu; Kojo Amponsah alias “Kamakazi” (35), arrested at Hwireso near Boankra; and Emmanuel Kwame Appiah alias “Taller” (38), apprehended at Danyame.

The syndicate leader, Eric Antwi Duku (42), sustained gunshot wounds during an operation on 22 February and later died in hospital. Recovered exhibits include a Bruni Mod 84 pistol with eight live rounds, forged vehicle documents, a tracking device, and a Toyota Corolla S.

Police investigations reveal the syndicate specialised in stealing Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser vehicles and had escalated to lethal force, linking them to multiple robberies in Amanfrom, Kronum, Tarkwa, and Kumasi.

The suspects remain in custody, with court arraignment imminent. The Ghana Police Service assures the public of its commitment to dismantling violent criminal networks and urges continued cooperation through credible information sharing.

The statement was signed by Godwin Ahianyo, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Head/Public Affairs Unit, Ashanti Region
