The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 suspects in connection with the death of a police officer who was attacked and lynched by a mob at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region.
According to a press release signed by DCOP David K. Amidaro, Regional Police Commander for the Savannah Region, preliminary investigations indicate that on Wednesday, September 16, the deceased officer and his colleagues were on highway patrol duties along the Gindabour to Kenkyen community road when a motorbike rider approaching their location suddenly diverted into the bush upon sighting the police vehicle.
The police statement said the team, suspicious of the rider’s actions, followed up from a different direction and found him unconscious on the bush road.
The officers picked him up and were conveying him to hospital when he died on the way.
Following news of the rider’s death, a mob from the community attacked the officers, resulting in the death of General Constable Redeemer Owusu.
The other officers on the team sustained varying degrees of injury, and the police vehicle was also damaged, the release said.
The bodies of both the deceased officer and the motorbike rider have been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
In response to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police has deployed a team of investigators and intelligence officers to assist with investigations and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna, Kalba, and the Regional Intelligence Team have since been deployed to the area to beef up security and maintain law and order.
All 36 suspects are currently in police custody assisting investigations and are expected to be put before court.
The Police Command has condemned the attack on its officers in strong terms and has assured that the perpetrators will be made to face the full rigours of the law.
