The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiamah, has announced a programme, set to be launched on Tuesday, November 3, to unveil enhanced security features for the country’s banknotes.
The new notes will include the GH¢1 and GH¢2, which have been withdrawn in recent times.
The programme, as announced by the Governor on Thursday, September 24, will be the Ghana Cedi Heritage Series.
“The Heritage Series will be based on the existing series, so there will be a new upgraded one for the GH¢1, for the GH¢2,” Dr Asiama said, “We are bringing that back.”
He added: “There will be another for the GH¢5, for the GH¢10, for the GH¢20, for the GH¢50, for the GH¢100 and for the GH¢200.”
He insisted that enhanced security features on the banknotes have become imperative as a result of the relatively long existence of the current ones.
“The rapid modernisation of our banknotes is, therefore, imperative, in order to ensure that they remain secure, durable, and responsive to the changing needs of the economy,” he said.
The Governor, however, called for the proper handling of the existing notes by all and sundry to reduce the replacement cost by the central bank.
“Let us desist from crumbling, from writing on them, from stapling them, or from using banknotes for decorative purposes, from what some call money bouquets, from showering, from spraying, or other forms of currency abuse.
“Proper handling will help preserve the quality of our banknotes. It will reduce replacement cost for the central bank, and it will support efficient currency management,” the Governor added.
