Finance Ministry claims Google’s regretted Cedi converter ‘error’

The Finance Ministry says Google has expressed regret over an ‘error’ in its currency convertor on Friday, March 15, 2019, showing the Cedi pegged so high against the US Dollar.

Various social media platforms had shots of the Google converter, which displayed the cedi about four times its actual value per the dollar.

This led many expressing worry over the poor performance of the Cedi, raising concerns in the past few months.

But a statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Finance Ministry indicated that Google considered it a regrettable error, and attributed it to a glitch in their system.

“In a letter addressed to the Office of the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Ernest Addison, Google’s Head of Public Policy and Government Relations, West and Francophone Africa said ‘we are aware of the issue of inaccurate conversions for Ghanaian Cedi currency on Friday the 15th of March. This was caused by a minor glitch that was quickly fixed,” the Ministry indicated in the statement.

According the Ministry, Google explained that it was a temporary issue that was resolved immediately.

Google further indicated that the glitch was not peculiar to Ghana, and that Nigeria’s Naira and Pakistan Rupee also experienced same some time back.
