The Minister of Education Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has set up a 10-member committee to advise on modalities for the reopening of schools in the pre-tertiary sector in Ghana.

Schools were shut down in March as a result of the coronavirus pandemic but has since been reopened for final year students to compete their exit examinations.

Final year tertiary students returned to school on Monday, June 15 to complete their academic work while final year senior high school (SHS) students returned on Monday, June 22 to prepare for the West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examinations (WASSCE). They were joined by Gold Track second year students, who have since completed their academic semester.

Final-year junior high school students returned on Monday, June 29 to also prepare for the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE), which begins on Monday, September 14.

During his 15th update to the nation, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo asked continuing students in tertiary schools which could not complete their academic work online to return on Monday, August 24 to complete their academic work.

  • First, second & third-year tertiary students return to school August 24

It is in line with this that the Minister of Education wants the committee to work to deliberate on the modalities for the approval of the president.

At the ceremony to inaugurate the committee, a statement from the Minister’s Press Secretary said, the 10 members were charged to bring their expertise and experience to bear in ensuring consultation with all stakeholders on the way forward on all the relevant issues.

The committee will be chaired by former Education Minister Professor Dominic Fobih, who is the current Chairman of the Board of Trustees for GETFund.

The members comprise representatives of the Ministry itself, the Ghana Education Service (GES), UNICEF, private sector schools as well as parents.

“The committee is expected to report to the Minister on Monday 21st September 2020 on its recommendations,” the statement signed by Rodney Nkrumah-Boateng said.
