Five of the alleged killers were arrested Tuesday

The assemblyman of Denkyira-Obuasi who is believed to have incited some residents of the town to lynch a military officer has been declared wanted.

Police say the assemblyman, William Baah, and two other women who are suspected to be neck-deep in gruesome murder are on the run.

William Baah has since the incident on Monday, May 29, fled the town and is being sought by the Police as the main suspect in the gruesome murder of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama,.

He was declared wanted Wednesday morning by the Upper Denkyira West District Security Council at a meeting on the security situation in the area following the murder incident, TV3’s Komla Klutese reports.

Details of the meeting were not revealed to the media, our correspondent reports.

Captain Mahama, a member of the 5th Infantry of the Ghana Armed Forces, was jogging at Denkyira-Obuasi at about 8:30am on May 29 when he was lynched and a part of his body set ablaze, the Military High Command confirmed in a statement issued Tuesday.

“The assemblyman and two other women who [are] believed to have involved; deeply involved in the lynching so we are also sending message around that those know their whereabouts should let us have them arrested so that we can continue our investigation,” Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ampah Benin, told our correspondent.

Police say Baa on May 29 at about 10:00am reported to the Police in the area that he received a distress call from food sellers along the along the Denkyira Obuasi highway that they have seen a man with a pistol hidden at his back who they suspect him to be an armed robber.

He told the Police he and two of his colleagues were rushed to the area where Captain Mahama spotted jogging.

According to the Police, Baah claimed they approached Captain Mahama “who pulled a pistol at him” but he managed to escape leaving his two colleagues behind.

Police rushed to the scene only to find that Captain Mahama had been lynched and a part of his body set on fire.

His body was filled with marks of assault including multiple deep cut wounds on the head and a partially burnt body, the Police have said.

Baah has since the incident not been seen in the area.

Arrest and discharge

Following a swoop in the town Tuesday by a team of Police and military personnel, a total of 166 people made up of 80 women and 86 men, were rounded up and screened after which five of them were arrested.

“But it doesn’t mean that we have left them off the hook. If there’s any further information or evidence we will call upon them so that we will continue investigation…As for the five, we’ve got concrete evidence that they were deeply involved but those we’ve discharged now it could happen that if there is fresh evidence we could rope them in,” DCOP Ampah Benin told TV3.

One of the five who was said to have sustained gunshots was Tuesday sent to a health facility for treatment while the remaining four were transported to the Central Regional Police Command in Cape Coast in the night.
