The team’s bus ran into a stationary truck at the Nkawkaw stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway

The Ghana Football Association has dispatched a high-powered delegation to Nkawkaw in the Eastern to offer well wishes to members of the Kumasi Asante Kotoko football club who were involved in an accident Wednesday night.

One person is feared dead in the accident which occured around 9:45pm when the team bus ran into a stationary vehicle on the Accra-Kumasi highway.

Players and officials of the team were returning to Kumasi after their Wednesday’s match day 22 Premier game with Inter Allies in Accra when the accident happened.

Kotoko lost the game by a goal at the El-Wak Stadium.

Unconfirmed suggests the team’s assistant equipment officer, Thomas Asare, who was trapped in the mangled bus has died.

The front side of the bus was mangled by the impact of the accident and some members of the team were trapped

But the team officials have in a tweet Thursday morning cautioned the public on the way they comment on the issue, saying “Families and other sensibilities ought to be duly respected as a human institution. Let’s remain calm and pray for our brothers.”

The team’s Management said it is “on top of the situation” and will soon make official public statement on the issue which has saddened the football fraternity in the country.

“The Head of the Medical Team, Dr. Michael Leat has been teaming up with medics at KATH to attend to the injured and all other victims,” it added.

“Personnel on the bus are generally fine. Some are however receiving treatment at the Holy Family Hospital, Nkawkaw.

A statement issued by the GFA Thursday morning said the Association is “devastated by the sad development” and urged all to pray for the team at this difficult moment.

“The GFA has established contact with the club, and our thoughts and prayers are with Kumasi Asante Kotoko, particularly the injured officials and players, who are currently receiving treatment at the Holy Family Hospital in Nkawkaw.”
