Management, some board members and workers of Ghana’s television giant, TV3 Network Limited, thronged the International Central Gospel Church (Christ Temple) in Accra Sunday, to thank God for sustaining the station for 20 years.
The service, which kick-starts a month-long anniversary by the free-to-air television station, was also to afford TV3 the opportunity to seek God’s favour as it begins a new phase of operation that would see it become a force on the African continent and beyond.
The 20th anniversary is on the theme “Reshaping News and Creating Stars in Ghana”.
General Overseer of the ICGC, Pastor Mensa Otabil, who preached on the topic ‘From Elijah to Elisha,” acknowledged the immense contribution of TV3 to the Church, especially in the area of broadcasting his sermon.
“They used to come here and do the recording themselves and we have a good relationship so in a sense they are part of our story,” he said, with a rousing applause from the congregation.
Pastor Otabil added: “We appreciate that they gave us a great opportunity on television to take the word of god to destinations. Thank you for the great service that you continue to do for us”.
Tough journey but rewarding journey
Chief Executive of Media General Group, Pearl Esua-Mensah said it is special and exciting that TV3 has turned 20 years today and the fact that it has been a leader in the industry all these years.
“It’s very exciting; it’s so special that TV3 has been able to keep its leadership for all these years but I’m also particularly excited because there are so many new things, so much excitement coming up in the next few years that it is really a good time to celebrate our 20 years,” she told 3FM’s Collins Essuman after the service.
She observed that the 20 years has been a “tough journey but it’s been full of rewarding moments and to think that we can still claim to be number one today, that’s something special.
Board member of Media General Group, Mawuli Hedo, said he was excited that TV3 has done so much, and that it is a good year today to celebrate the 20 years of the station.
He described the journey so far as “very good,” adding “we’re grateful to God”.
TV3’s ‘held the ground very well’
General Manager of News at Media General, Joseph Warungu described the anniversary moment as “a fantastic day!”.
In his estimation, it has been an amazing journey for the station, grounding his assessment more on the fact that “TV3 has held the ground very well” over the years and “It’s still a name that people recognize, [a name] that people respect” in the industry.
As the person leading the company’s news brand into another level by giving it more international outlook in the coming months, he said “It’s gonna get even more exciting over the next few months and years to come.
“They should expect a completely different way of doing news that is engaging. They should expect to see a station that is a lot more closer to its people, that covers the issues in-depth not just in Ghana and the sub region, but also international. We want to bring the world to Ghana but also Ghana to the world. That’s where we’re heading,” Mr Warungu told Essuman.
A pacesetter and game-changer
Head of station at Onua 95.1FM, Kojo Ackaah-Kwarteng, said TV3 should be credited with wonderful television broadcast in Ghana, saying “tv3 has been a pacesetter and a game-changer in the TV industry with the way it has approached how the news is packaged and also reality shows.
“Even though the industry is now packed, I think that the distinction TV3 has made in the industry can never be overlooked. That’s why it’s an exciting moment for me to be part of the team which is driving what was started 20 years ago. I’m highly excited and looking forward to sustaining what we are doing and becoming better,” he said.
Touching on the future of Media General under which TV3 falls, he said “In five six years, I’m foreseeing Media General overtaking all the competitors and becoming the best not only in Ghana but across West Africa and beyond.”
Impacting lives
Head of News of TV3, Matilda Haynes who also marks her 15 years with the station, said it has been an exciting period for her.
“Incidentally this is my 15th year here and it reorients you to look at life differently. TV3 will develop you to be able to touch base with people that under normal circumstances you wouldn’t have the privilege to touch base with them,” she told Collins Essuman after the service.
She added “As we mark our 20th anniversary and revise our operations I believe that we are going to touch base more with people and impact more on the lives of Ghanaians so that we foster development of this country.”
TV3 still force to reckon with
Head of News at MG Radio, Abraham Asare, was excited that TV3 has maintained its dominance and force in the industry over the years, setting the pace for competitors to follow.
“We’ve proven that in spite of the competition that we faced, we are holding on and we are still leading. Our news is still leading; we are first in news best in entertainment,” he stated.
“We’re excited that TV3 is 20 years. We’re excited that even after 20 years we are still a force to reckon with. Many media houses started, some even more than 20 years ago but they are not as strong as we are today.
“We are 20 years; we are not just a television station; we have a strong online presence, we have a strong radio presence, strong social media presence and everyone knows us in Ghana. It’s exciting to see the company growing, charting paths that others have not been confident enough to chart,” he added.
