President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II has called for swift prosecution of any chief found culpable of corruption.
According to him, the chieftaincy institution is losing its dignity due to some bad practices engaged in by a number of them.
He was reacting to the latest Afrobarometer report, which revealed that about 53% of Ghanaians believe some traditional leaders in the country are corrupt.
“From time to time we get the corruption index report coming and I personally believe that, yes, here is some level of corruption among the chiefs,” Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II observed.
He added that chieftaincy is a noble profession which commands a lot of respect, and advised chiefs to desist from corrupt practices.
“You are extorting money from the people , if it is the administration of justice why don’t you administer justice the best of your ability instead of taking money from anybody,” he stated.
He further advised the chiefs not to accept even gifts after delivering judgments.
He said, “It is the statutory function that Nananom perform, and once they perform that function , that is the end of it… tracking kings down to get them is usually the problem. But once we are able to track them down and get them they should be put before the law court.”
He maintained that traditional leaders should rather lead in the fight against corruption instead of the ones being accused of involving in corruption.
