The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has decided to shut down the Accra Desalination Plant in a bid to “resolve the challenges”.
According to the Company, the shutdown took effect January 1, 2018.
“Management has as a result made alternative arrangements to serve the supply area from the Accra and Tema Booster Stations,” a statement issued by Head of Public Relations Stanley Martey said.
The Plant, until the decision to shut down, served Teshie, Nungua and surrounding areas including Sakumono, Lashibi, Baatsona and GREDA and Regimanuel estates.
It was commissioned in April, 2015 by former president John Dramani Mahama as the country’s first desalination plant.
The statement dated December 28, 2017 said the Company has encountered some challenges with the management of the plant.
“As a result, water flow to the service area has been erratic,” it said.
“Management is taking the right steps in resolving the issues and will request of customers and the general public to bear with the company in these times.”
It stressed that the decision is “for a good purpose”.
Consumers dependent on the Plant will from hence be served on Wednesdays and weekends from the alternative sources.
