Legal practitioner Abraham Amaliba has flayed the president for appointing a “vindictive” person like Martin Amidu as the Special Prosecutor.
He has no doubt in his mind that the Special Prosecutor-designate would “tread a straight narrow path” with much concentration on the opposition National Democratic Congress.
President Akufo-Addo should not have appointed someone who is “vengeful, vindictive”, Abraham Amaliba who is a communication member of the NDC said on TV3’s New Day on Saturday.
He claimed Martin Amidu had said prior to the 2016 general elections which the NDC lost that “he will fight the NDC to the last drop of his blood”.
The Special Prosecutor who was outdoored on Thursday by the president served under the Atta Mills NDC administration as the Attorney General but later fell out with the party over issues of corruption.
Amidu’s appointment would therefore give him the impetus to do all he can to prove to Ghanaians that the corruption allegations he made against the NDC is true, Amaliba feared.
Therefore, he stated, “the decision to appoint Martin Amidu was a bad one, because he is one-sided”.
Estrange member
Though Martin Amidu is a card bearing member of the NDC, Amaliba calls his current standing in the party as “estrange”, which he said has been capitalised on by the NPP government to appoint him in order to “persecute us”.
He was alarmed at Martin Amidu, an anti-graft campaigner’s deafening silence on certain corruption allegations in the NPP like the BOST saga, the one involving musician A-Plus and two deputy chiefs of staff.
On that score, he said, “I don’t think the president should be commended for appointing somebody from NDC”.
But a leading member of the Convention People’s Party, kwame Jantuah thinks the appointment of Martin Amidu was apt.
“The NPP has been smart with this appointment,” he said, noting that the government doesn’t want a situation where fingers would be pointed at it for witch hunting its political opponent.
