Members of the LPG Operators Association have threatened to go to court over the implementation of a cylinder re-circulation policy.
According to the association, government ought to engage them in a conversation in order to come up with safety measures instead of the re-circulation policy which they say would render them jobless.
A member of the association Nicholas Issaka Gbana who spoke on TV3’s News at 10 said the association is ready to head to court to get their concerns addressed.
“We are talking, if there is no understanding, we go to court, because we think we have a solid case, and our lawyers are ready,” Nicholas Issaka Gbana said.
According to him, the association is convinced there is no basis and justification for the cylinder re-circulation policy.
He further alleged that plans by the National Petroleum Authority and other stakeholders in the energy sector to implement the policy, is an attempt to weed the LPG operators out.
Nicholas Issaka Gbana said all the association requires of the Energy Ministry is to drop the Cylinder Re-circulation Model (CRM) and engage the LPG operators to discuss safety measures.
According to him, the CRM had been tried and implemented as far back as 1997, but could not be sustained; hence there is the need for more engagements with the LPG operators to find a lasting solution to ensure safety at fuel pumps.
Cylinder Re-circulation Model
In October 2017, President Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo called for the implementation of the Cylinder Re-circulation Model of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
The directive follows the frequent gas explosions at some LPG stations in some parts of the country, which led to the loss of lives with many left injured.
The call by President Akufo-Addo for the implementation of the policy has since been greeted with agitations from the LPG Operators Association who said the implementation of the policy will cause them to lose their jobs.
Although officials of the National Petroleum Authority have assured the LPG operators that their jobs will remain intact despite the implementation of the re-circulation policy, the operators still insist the policy should not be implemented.
