Coronavirus cases in South Africa have passed the 200,000 mark. Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said four provinces were at risk of a surge adding that a lockdown for the provinces was a possibility. The affected provinces are Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Cases in the country are rising with thousands of new cases being reported daily. Ghana has recorded the highest number of cases yet since the outbreak of coronavirus in the country on Thursday, March 12. According to the latest release by the Disease Surveillance Department of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Monday, July 6, 992 new cases have been confirmed. As a result, from 20,085 on Sunday, the country’s total cumulative cases have reached 21,077. Seven more persons have also lost the battle to the virus, bringing the total number of fatalities to 129. On the brighter side, 16,070 patients have either recovered or been discharged. The Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) has sacked three of its temporary officials in Sagnarigu in the Northern Region after a polling agent stole some registration forms last Saturday. Alhassan Abdullai Mohammed, who is said to be representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stole eight of Form 1A forms but was arrested immediately. He was subsequently handed over to the Northern Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service. The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has suspended operations at the surgical department as a result of some staff contracting coronavirus. The suspension of non-emergency surgical cases will be for a period of two weeks. “This measure is therefore to protect our clients and the rest of the staff who are still at post and providing care to patients,” a news release issued by Head of Public Relations Mustapha Salifu on Monday said.
