President Donald Trump has said he is likely to close the US border if Mexico does not do more to stop migrants reaching the United States. The closure would disrupt border crossings, threatening trade worth billions of dollars. Mr Trump’s threat follows a surge in migrants travelling through Mexico to seek asylum in the US. Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he would not be drawn into confrontation on the issue. Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said in a tweet that Mexico was a “great neighbour” to the US and would “not act on the basis of threats”. What did…
Ghana’s ecommerce industry is flourishing as the country continues to experience economic development and increased internet penetration. Online transactions have grown year over year as consumers have become more comfortable making purchases online. Millennials, who are often more tech-savvy, are reshaping how we do business and smart companies are springing up to serve unmet needs of this growing customer segment. One of such companies is Giftologi, which will be launching www.mygiftologi.com on May 1, 2019, as the first multi-purpose online gift registry in West Africa, possibly Africa, serving the Ghanaian market. The CEO, Elizabeth Tay, who is no newcomer to…
In a highly unusual step for the firm, Apple has given up on a product because it could not make it work adequately. AirPower, announced in 2017, was a mat meant to charge multiple devices without needing to plug them in. But it is understood the firm’s engineers were perhaps unable to stop the mat from getting too hot. “After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project,” the firm said. The company did not elaborate further. However, rumours of issues with the product had been circulating since its announcement in…
Theresa May and her cabinet are looking for ways to bring her EU withdrawal agreement back to the Commons for a fourth attempt at winning MPs’ backing. The PM said the UK would need “an alternative way forward” after her plan was defeated by 58 votes on Friday. MPs from all parties will test support for other options during a second round of “indicative votes” on Monday. But government sources have not ruled out a run-off between whichever proves most popular and the PM’s Brexit plan. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has called on Mrs May to change her deal or…
Managing Director of Ghana Post, James Kwofie, who doubles as the Chairman of the West African Postal Conference (WAPCO) Council Administration, has identified a major setback impeding the growth and development of the postal and e-commerce services in West Africa. Mr. Kwofie was speaking at a two-day workshop held in Cote d’Ivoire. It was organised by the ECOWAS Commission and WAPCO on the ‘Contribution of the Post to the Development of E-Commerce in West Africa’. Cote d’Ivoire would again assemble stakeholders of the postal and e-commerce sector as it hosts the 27th Universal Postal Congress next year in Abidjan. The…
The 13th edition of the All African Games will be hosted in Ghana in 2023. As Ghana steps up preparations to ensure a successful hosting of the multi-sport event, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has deemed it necessary to collaborate with all stakeholders to put together and inaugurate four working committees that will ensure the country’s successful organization and participation. The four committees include Ghana 2023 African Games Project Team, National Sports Policy Review Committee, International Games and Competition and Local Organizing Committee (LOC) 2019 International Table Tennis Federation/African Tennis Federation (ITTF/ATTF). The Ghana Athletes Association (GAA) has begun preparations towards African Athletics U-18 (Youth) and U-20 (Junior) championships in Cote d’lvoire. With less than four months to the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) championships in Cote d’lvoire, Ghana-based athletes are set to continue their quest to qualify for the competition at the national trials scheduled for the Tamale Sports Stadium on Saturday, March 30. The trials will also serve to provide opportunities for Ghana-based athletes to qualify for the All African Games in…
The Minority in Parliament is calling on the head of the Roman Catholic Church, based in the Vatican, to recall and reassign Reverend Father Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, who is currently the Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW). In a statement issued on Friday, March 29, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus is convinced the Roman Catholic priest has embarrassed the church with his management of UEW and the recommended action to Pope Francis I will “save the church from further embarrassment”. This comes in the wake of events that have led to the shutdown of UEW. “Undoubtedly,…
“There is just so much hurt, disappointment and oppression one can take. The line between reason and madness grows thinner,” says Rosa Parks. When the woman nicknamed the First Lady of Civil Rights said this, she probably must have had Ghana in mind. Indeed, there is so much hurt, disappointment and oppression in our country that I recently have told a couple of friends how frustrated I am. So, when I published my article dubbed “‘Obama’- From High School Sports reporter to National Best Sports Journalist” on February 15, 2019, I said to myself not to worry over national issues.…
A lawsuit against the airplane maker Boeing has been filed in a United States federal court by the family of a man who died in the Ethiopian Airlines crash earlier this month. All 157 crew and passengers were killed in the accident. The relatives of Jackson Musoni, a Rwandan citizen, allege that Boeing’s 737 Max airliner had a design defect in its automated flight control system. The entire 737 Max fleet was grounded following the crash, the second involving the 737 Max in five months. Boeing has yet to respond to the action. On Wednesday Boeing announced “fixes” to the…
