Parliament on Tuesday began official sitting with a tribute paid victims of the fatal accident that occurred at Ampomakrom in the Kintampo South Constituency of the Bono East Region. But before the Member of Parliament of that constituency was allowed to pay her tribute by way of a statement on the floor, the Speaker, Reverend Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, expressed unhappiness with media reports that the legislative arm of government snubbed the victims of the twin road accidents to rather pay respect to victims of March 15’s terrorist attack in New Zealand and Cyclone Idai in south African countries of…
The Western Regional Police Command is preparing to process seamstress Rose Mawusi Fiaku and her mason partner Lawson Lartey for court after they abducted a one-year-old baby from his mother at the Takoradi Market Circle. The loss of lives and property in the Talensi mining community of Gbane in the Upper East Region is set to worsen in the coming days, according to civil society, as some individuals and groups are plotting “mayhem through acts of militancy and war”. In a statement released on Monday, NORPRA wants a thorough investigation into the operations of Cassius Mining Limited. It alleges that the directors of the mining company have criminal records and that is…
Ireland’s former two-weight UFC champion Conor McGregor says he has “retired from the sport formally known as ‘Mixed Martial Art'”. The 30-year-old announced his decision on social media on Tuesday. “I wish all my old colleagues well going forward,” he added. McGregor’s last fight ended in defeat, when he was beaten by Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018 – the Russian winning the lightweight contest by a fourth-round submission. It was his first fight in the octagon in two years and the defeat was marred by a post-fight brawl which led to both fighters being fined and suspended. Since making his…
Have you ever been told to “grow up” in your 20s or need an excuse as to why you still find cat videos on the internet really funny? Well now you might have an official reason as to why you’re not acting like a mature adult. People don’t become fully “adult” until they’re in their 30s, according to brain scientists. Currently the UK law says you become a mature adult when you reach the age of 18. Scientists who study the brain and nervous system say the age at which you become an adult is different for everyone. Research suggests…
The Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, Dr Godfred Akyea-Darkwah, says he sees no end in sight to road accidents in the country. “It is going up and it will still go up unless the right strategies are adopted.” He says if governments – past and present – do not commit to implementing to the letter the Legislative Instrument 2180, the country will continue to mourn deaths on its roads. Speaking on Midday Live on TV3 on Monday, March 25, Dr Akyea-Darkwah noted that there are three fundamental causes of road accidents: roads, vehicles and human…
Plans to classify female athletes by their testosterone levels “contravene international human rights” says the United Nations Human Rights Council. Olympic 800m champion Semenya, 28, is challenging the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) over its bid to restrict levels of testosterone in female runners. The UN called the plans “unnecessary, humiliating and harmful”. The IAAF said the motion given to the UN contained “inaccurate statements”. Under the IAAF rules, female athletes with naturally high testosterone levels would have to race against men or change events unless they took medication to reduce those levels. The regulations will apply to women…
“And when the Philistine, taking note, saw David, he had a poor opinion of him: for he was only a boy, red-haired and good-looking.”― 1 Sam. 17:42 [BBE] 2016 saw a world wonder happening in the English Premier League. A football team, after 132 years of its existence, made a striking statement that contrasted predictions of even their die-hard fans. Leicester City had only been promoted to the premier league in 2014 and almost drowned into relegation in 2015. Starting the 2015/2016 season as the least tipped to win the coveted league title, they beat all odds to emerge winners―…
Kofi Kinaata, the Fante rap god, won my heart from the very first day I had the benefit of listening to anything from him. From that point on, I have always craved for his next song after I have barely consumed the last one. Nelson Mandela is credited to have said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language that goes to his heart”. It goes without mention that Kofi KInaata sings predominantly in the Sekondi-Takoradi Fante slang. Being a Sekondi-Takoradi Fante speaker myself,…
The number of people known to have contracted Ebola in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has exceeded 1,000, making the current outbreak the second largest ever recorded, aid workers say. More than 629 people have died since last August. New cases have increased sharply over the past week, with 58 new cases reported – the highest number in a week in 2019. A leading aid group, the International Rescue Committee (IRC), said DR Congo had reached a “tragic milestone”. “We are already almost seven months into this outbreak and at this stage we should be seeing the case rate declining,…
