Apple briefly lost its $1tn valuation on Thursday when its shares fell 7% in after-hours trading despite posting record results. The tech giant’s strategy of charging more for its phones has paid off, with revenues jumping in the last three months despite relatively flat sales. Revenues rose 20% to $62.9bn year-on-year, and profits rose 31% to $14.1bn. But a warning of possible weaker sales in coming months sparked a share price slide after official trading ended. The sell-off accelerated after Apple said it would stop disclosing the number of units sold. Apple executives defended their decision, arguing that the figures…
Former President John Dramani Mahama says the energy crisis that hit Ghana between 2012 and 2016 – popularly referred to as ‘dumsor’ – was solved by his administration, not the current government. He is therefore telling the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop deceiving Ghanaians that the Akufo-Addo-led government resolved the crisis. Addressing delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the Adentan Constituency as part of his five-day campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region, Mr Mahama described as false claims by NPP officials that they solved dumsor. He explained that every single additional generation capacity of electricity currently…
Michael Jackson, who died in 2009, holds his place at the top of business experts Forbes’ list for another year, after raking in around $400m (£310m) over the past 12 months. A large chunk of the cash comes from Sony’s recent acquisition of his estate’s stake in EMI Music Publishing for an eye-watering $287m (£223m). It sees The King of Pop hold off The King, Elvis Presley, in second with a mere $40m ($31m) to show for this year. The bulk of Elvis’ posthumous fortune comes from selling tickets to his home in Graceland and a new $45m (£35m) entertainment…
The Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has completed investigations into alleged fraud by former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi, government has said. Mr Nyantakyi was reported to the Directorate by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in May for defrauding by false pretences by the use of the name of the president, his vice, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and other government officials in a deal. This came to light following an investigative documentary by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas. The documentary was publicly screened at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) – and subsequently nationwide – from…
The Asuogyaman District Chief Executive, Samuel Kwame Agyekum, has expressed surprise about the theft of bolts and nuts on the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku in the Eastern Region. He said there are police officers constantly on the tollbooth side of the Adomi Bridge so surprised thieves have managed to steal implements on such national property. The €12.9 million-renovated Adomi Bridge, which links the Eastern and Volta Regions, may soon become a death trap following a habit of people making away with its bolts and nuts that brace the bridge up. The bridge was in December 2015 reopened to the public…

Despite the programme expected to enter its final phase of employment on Thursday, the Nation Builders Corps (NABCo) has been hit with withdrawals. Dr Kojo Frimpong was speaking on 3FM’s Sunrise hosted by Winston Amoah. After outdooring the programme at the Black Star Square on Wednesday, October 17, recruits were placed to start work in the various districts on Thursday, November 1. 100k NABCo recruits posted…
Ten Benin youth players and former football federation president Anjorin Moucharafou have been handed prison sentences for age cheating. A Cotonou court found them guilty of lying about their ages, which saw them failing MRI tests in Niger. September’s failed tests saw Benin disqualified from last month’s regional qualifying tournament in Niger for the 2019 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations. The players were given six-month prison sentences with five months suspended. Because the players have been held in prison since their return from Niamey in September, they do not face more time behind bars. Moucharafou, who was president of the…
Turkey has given its first official statement on how it believes writer Jamal Khashoggi was killed, saying he was immediately strangled. The statement follows weeks of media reports about the murder at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October. Turkey has yet to provide evidence. Chief prosecutor Irfan Fidan said a meeting with his Saudi counterpart on Monday yielded “no concrete results”. Saudi Arabia has not commented on the meeting. The Turkish statement said: “In accordance with plans made in advance, the victim, Jamal Khashoggi, was choked to death immediately after entering the Consulate General of Saudi Arabia.” His…
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II embarked on an inspection tour of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Wednesday barely 10 days after students vandalized property to protest claimed brutalities against them. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is the Chancellor of the University, was out of the country when ensuing incidents from the students’ action occurred. The University was closed down indefinitely while the Governing Council was dissolved by government, which has since made a U-turn and deferred to the Asantehene. On Wednesday, the King of the Ashanti Kingdom inspected the state of property at the school.…
