Defending champion Roger Federer is out of Wimbledon after eighth seed Kevin Anderson fought back from two sets down in a gripping quarter-final. Top seed Federer, who was aiming for a record-equalling ninth singles title, missed a match point in the third set. It proved pivotal as the South African recovered to win 2-6 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-4 13-11 in four hours and 13 minutes. The 2017 US Open finalist will meet Canada’s Milos Raonic or American John Isner in his first SW19 semi-final. Eight-time champion Federer has already won more Wimbledon singles titles than any other man, but was…
When the Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP) admonished Ghanaians to be watchful of investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, so he does not get access to our bedrooms, the response from the public was as predictable as the havoc caused by the annual ritual of floods in Accra. An overwhelming uproar it was! Personally, I asked, “How?” Kennedy Ohene Agyapong had complained of the journalist’s method of investigating his suspects― that which many have termed as an entrapment. I must say that I do not see that as a problem. If Anas comes to you with money without it being…
A 51st minute header by Samuel Umtiti has sent France into the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The goal gave France a 1-0 win over Belgium in the first semi-final game of the tournament in Russia. The goal at Saint-Petersburg on Tuesday is only the third for the FC Barcelona defender in his international career. Playing in front of a packed stadium, which had in attendance French President Emmanuel Macron, Les Bleus had to be plunged into a defence mode by the Red Devils, whose goal-scoring record in the tournament is unparalled. They had put a total of…
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday joined the chiefs and people of Adaklu in the Volta Region for a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a multi-purpose youth and sports centre. It is one of 10 to be situated nationwide. Minister for Youth and Sports Isaac Asiamah, who was present at the ceremony, explained that the construction of the multi-purpose centres of excellence in the 10 regions of the country is being done at the behest of President Akufo-Addo. The deliberate provision of these facilities, the Minister stressed, “has never happened before in this country. It is a major…
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated that there is no political agenda underlying the proposed creation of six more regions in the country. “I am not doing it for votes,” he stressed. “There are plenty of regions in this country where they don’t vote for me. Why would it be any different if these regions are created?” President Akufo-Addo reassured that “there is no political agenda in this matter, and there is no attempt to create ethnic antagonisms or factions in this exercise. It is meant to try and improve the governance of our people.” President Akufo-Addo made this…
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed that his government has set up the first cattle ranch in the Afram Plains in the Eastern Region to help deal with the Fulani herdsmen and cattle menace. Speaking at Adaklu on Day 2 of his three-day tour of the Volta Region, President Akufo-Addo stated that his government has begun the construction of the ranches across the country in fulfillment of his pledge in the run-up to the 2016 elections. “The first ranch has been established at the Afram Plains, and we have chosen several sites around the country where we are going…
The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has responded to claims by the Minority in Parliament that the state’s oil management firm supported its board chairman, Freddie Worsemao Blay, in his campaign to be New Patriotic Party’s National Chairman. In a statement issued in the wake of Mr Blay’s election last Saturday, the Minority demanded a forensic audit into the accounts and activities of GNPC and, consequently, asked Mr Blay to step aside. “We also demand that Mr. Freddie Blay be made to step aside as GNPC Board Chairman in the interim ahead of the forensic audit so as not to…
Much of the corruption related activities are seemingly affiliated to politics with politicians getting the biggest of backlash in the distribution of blames. Corruption is only corruption when it involves a politician, the more reason why the citizenry don’t have the penchant to pursue ‘corrupt’ civil servants the way they do at the mention of a politician. My views in this piece maybe unpopular but I’ll state them regardless. Have you ever wondered the possibility of corruption in academic institutions, their procurement processes and certain ‘questionable’ elements on fees items. What even happens at school fees negotiations? Anyway, this isn’t…
Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is set to join Juventus, the Spanish club have confirmed. It is understood a deal worth £105m has been reached between the two clubs that will see the 33-year-old Portuguese end a nine-year stay at the Bernabeu. Ronaldo won four Champions Leagues at Real but had a turbulent relationship with president Florentino Perez. “The time has come to open a new stage in my life, that’s why I asked the club to accept transferring me,” he said. Ronaldo joined Real from Manchester United for £80m in July 2009 and scored a club-record 451 goals and…
