The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) says the decision by the board of directors of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for Director General Dr Kwame Akuffo Anoff-Ntow to proceed on leave is wrong. The Association said the decision infringes upon the 1992 Constitution, which gives such powers to the National Media Commission (NMC). It said the setting up of an interim management committee (IMC) to perform functions in the absence of Dr Anoff-Ntow even worsens the case. “That amounts to the usurpation of the NMC’s constitutional mandate,” GJA said in a statement dated January 18, 2018. The board at an emergency…
Seven TV crew members have been arrested at a US airport after allegedly trying to film the smuggling of a fake bomb through security. The incident happened on Thursday at Newark Liberty in New Jersey. Transport officials said a bag carrying an item with “all the makings of an improvised explosive device” was found before it had cleared security. US media say the crew were part of a reality show being made by a production company for CNBC. The production company, Endemol Shine North America, issued a statement saying it was investigating the incident and co-operating with the authorities. “We…
Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick will become a billionaire, after investors agreed to take a large stake in the ride-hailing firm. A consortium led by Japan’s Softbank is buying a chunk of the company from existing shareholders as well as new Uber shares in a $9.3bn (£6.7bn) deal. Mr Kalanick, who stepped down as chief executive in June, is selling $1.4bn worth of stocks, it is widely reported. While he had long been worth billions on paper, this deal cements his wealth. Mr Kalanick was driven out of the top job by a series of scandals, but his ties with Uber…
Adolescence now lasts from the ages of 10 to 24, although it used to be thought to end at 19, scientists say. Young people continuing their education for longer, as well as delayed marriage and parenthood, has pushed back popular perceptions of when adulthood begins. Changing the definition is vital to ensure laws stay appropriate, they write in an opinion piece in the Lancet Child & Adolescent Health journal. But another expert warns doing so risks “further infantilising young people”. When puberty begins Puberty is considered to start when the part of the brain known as the hypothalamus starts releasing…

The Director of Legal Division at the National Communications Authority (NCA), Abena Asafo Adjei, has told an Accra High Court that monies withdrawn from the Authority’s account and used in purchasing cyber security equipment did not have the approval of the board. Hearts of Oak Head coach Frank Nuttal has heaped praise on his players for their resistance to overcome a tough test from their arch-rivals Asante Kotoko in the FA Cup semi-final tie on Wednesday. The Accra-based side came through with a 4-2 penalty shootout win against the Fabulous boys after a 0-0 stalemate to progress to the final. Nuttal couldn’t hide his joy and says they deserved the win. “It’s another well-fought game by both sides especially when you consider it being a preseason game and both sets of players really worked very hard for the club and that is…
A Canadian woman has been convicted of killing her friend after police discovered the murder weapon used in a picture of the pair on social media. Gargol was found strangled to death near a landfill in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, with Antoine’s belt near her body. Antoine was sentenced to seven years for manslaughter. She was identified as a suspect after she posted a selfie on Facebook of the two of them, showing her wearing the belt hours before Gargol died. What happened? The two…
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says his administration, over the course of its first year in office, has risen to the challenge, and demonstrated that doing things differently achieves positive results. According to President Akufo-Addo, “we inherited an economy that was in distress, choked by debt, and with macroeconomic fundamentals in disarray. We had to do things differently, and those were my marching orders to all members of the government.” Thus, upon assumption of office, his Economic Management Team set to work to sort out the country’s macroeconomic fundamentals, and to find imaginative ways to deal with the oppressive debt…
It’s January, which means you may have stood on the scales and decided to go on a diet. But what sort? For many years, low-carb diets have been in fashion – based on the belief that eating lots of carbohydrates, particularly in the form of sugary treats such as white bread, rice or pasta, is bad for your waist and for your blood-sugar control. The reasoning is that if you eat lots of carbohydrates and sugars, particularly the sort without fibre that get quickly absorbed, they will rapidly push up your blood glucose (sugar) levels. Unless you burn this glucose…
