Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has been appointed as Chancellor for the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in the Western Region. The decision was made at the 62nd meeting of the Council of UMaT held on Friday, September 15, 2017. The appointment is said to be the first since the Tarkwa-based university was inaugurated on August 18, 2005. Mr Kufuor’s appointment is for a first term of five years “and to be renewed for another term of five years”. Russia’s Vladimir Putin has said he will seek another term as president, in next year’s election. He made the announcement in a speech to workers at a car factory in the Volga city of Nizhny Novgorod. “I will put forward my candidacy for the post of president of the Russian federation,” he said. The headmaster for Fijai Senior High School, Kenneth Dotse Agbomadzi, has debunked reports that 200 students were under an attack from a strange disease. A man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court accused of a plot to bomb Downing Street’s security gates and then kill Theresa May. Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard that Naa’imur Zakariyah Rahman, 20, from north London, planned to detonate a homemade bomb and attack the PM with a suicide vest and a knife. A second man also appeared in court charged with preparing terrorist acts. Both men indicated they will plead not guilty and were remanded in custody. France’s biggest rock star Johnny Hallyday has died after a battle with lung cancer. He was 74. The singer sold about 100 million records and starred in a number of films in a career that began in 1960. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion D’Honneur by President Jacques Chirac in 1997. An Accra High Court has dismissed an application for a review of bail conditions filed by lawyer for Chinese galamsey kingpin Aisha Huang. According to the court, presided over by Justice Charles Edward Ebow Baiden, the accused did not tender compelling evidence for the bail variation to be granted.
