A project to ensure high literacy among kindergarten and primary pupils in the Kwahu Afram Plains South of the Eastern Region has commenced following findings that only two per cent of kindergarten pupils in the area can identify alphabets and read with comprehension.   An annual monitoring in 2018 revealed that 98 per cent of pupils in the area do not have any reading material at home while 68 per cent did not have any kind of learning support at home. A Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Mr Kwesi Jonah, has said the impending referendum is not to decide whether or not Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) should be elected. Instead, it would be a referendum that would ensure the amendment of article 55(3) of the 1992 Constitution to allow political parties to participate in local governance elections in the country. Electricity consumers in the country will from July 1 pay more for electricity as the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has approved an 11.17 per cent increment for the power distributors. A 62-year-old landlady, Hawa Mohammed, has been sentenced by the Madina District Magistrate Court to a 12-month jail term with hard labour or pay a fine of GHȻ2,400, which is equivalent to 200 penalty units, for causing her tenants to dispose waste indiscriminately.
