Only boxing can offer such drama. And when it comes to the heavyweights, it happens with such thunder that it feels as if the ceiling has fallen in. Anthony Joshua suffered his first, dramatic shock defeat of his career against challenger Andy Ruiz Jr after being stopped in the seventh round at Madison Square Garden. Joshua was dropped four times in the fight as the Mexican-American claimed the British boxer’s three world title belts in one of the biggest underdog upsets in heavyweight history. They will compare this to the night in 1990 when the unfavoured Buster Douglas knocked out then-undefeated…
Government is demanding explanation and apology from a Ghanaian artist who plagiarised a photo of a high-rise building in Kenya for use as the cover of the ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ strategy document. Richmond Bansah was commissioned to produce an original artwork that reflects the vision of the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda and the highlights of the strategy document. Instead, he allegedly plagiarised a photo of Dawit Insurance Limited headquarters in Nairobi, triggering criticism against the government, with some persons describing the act as embarrassing. Critics were shocked by how government officials led President Nana Addo Dankwa AKufo-Addo to show off…
Liverpool erased the disappointment of last season’s Champions League final loss to Real Madrid by claiming the trophy for the sixth time with victory over Tottenham in Madrid. It was Mohamed Salah, such a disconsolate figure when he was injured early in that loss, who set Liverpool on their way with a penalty after two minutes when Moussa Sissoko was contentiously punished for handball. In a final that rarely touched the heights of the blockbuster semi-finals that made this an all-Premier League Champions League showpiece, Spurs had their chances but were denied by Liverpool keeper Alisson, who saved well from…

Uganda has banned the consumption and sale of alcohol in sachets, which officials say threaten public health. The small plastic packets of spirits – sometimes up to 45% proof – are favoured by those on low incomes because they are cheap, costing as little as 13 US cents (10p). Ugandans are among the highest consumers of alcohol in Africa. Drinks manufacturers in the country are now required to package liquor in bottles of not less than 200ml. Uganda’s Minister of Trade and Co-operatives Amelia Kyambadde told the BBC that the sachets were even purchased by schoolchildren. “Because this alcohol…

Director of Elections of the National Democratic Congress, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has accused government of drafting the vigilantism and related offences bill out of anger in the wake of pressure on it to end political vigilantism in the country. Attorney General (AG) Gloria Afua Akuffo in April presented before parliament the new bill seeking to criminalise and disband all forms of political vigilantism in the country. It came on the back of the increase in criminal acts by political thugs of the various political parties, and the recent Ayawaso West Wouguon by-election violence that triggered gunshots, injuring some persons. President…
The Director of Programmes at the Center for Democratic Development (CDD) Ghana, Nana Kwabena Aborampah Mensah has asked the Electoral Commission to reform its communications department to ensure effective information delivery. He observed the absence of a functioning Public Relations Department in particular, was causing some damage to the image of the Jean Mensa-chaired Commission. The leadership of the EC has recently been criticised for letting Mrs Mensa and her deputies become the everyday mouthpiece and spokespersons for the Commission which critics say has lately become combative in its dealing with political parties. Almost all statements from the EC headquarters…
