MPs will be asked to vote again on Brexit on Friday but only on part of the deal negotiated with the EU. They will vote on the withdrawal agreement on the Irish “backstop”, divorce bill and citizens’ rights. But it will not amount to a third “meaningful vote” on the deal, as it will not include a vote on the UK’s future relationship with the EU. Amid anger from MPs, Andrea Leadsom said it was “crucial” if the UK wanted to secure a Brexit delay until 22 May. MPs will be debating the motion on the day the UK was…

Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, says the current state of hardship in Ghana will force Ghanaians to bring back the National Democratic Congress into office. In a statement, he traced the antecedence of the NPP and pointed out that anytime they were in power, they eventually derailed on their development agenda to irritate Ghanaians into going back to a leftist party. “Whether it is the time of Busia or Kufuor, Ghanaians have always ended up gravitating towards the party with the more practical philosophy for the development of the country. A party like NDC, which at the moment…
Former president of the Association of Ghana Industries, Tony Oteng-Gyasi has indicated that recent pumping of about 800 million dollars into the market to arrest the depreciating cedis amounts to a wasteful venture. In his view, it would rather be “prudent” if government allows the currency to run its course devoid of manipulations. Speaking at the second Media General Economic Dialogue Series in Accra Thursday, Mr. Oteng-Gyasi pointed out that policy makers should take interest in all indicators causing the cedi to depreciate. The dialogue themed ‘The Ghana Cedi; Breaking the cycle of depreciation’, assembled other speakers well vested in…

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has rubbished assertions that the recent depreciation of the cedi against major trading currencies on the international market is the results of weak economic fundamentals. “…It is clearer from the data that the depreciation of the cedi was not due to weak economic fundamentals,” he told Parliament Thursday when he appeared to brief the House on the depreciation of the cedi. He also addressed the MPs on Ghana’s exit from the three-year IMF extended credit facility and the success of the 3 billion-dollar eurobond secured by the government last week. As the cedi depreciated from 4.9…
