Named after Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, aphrodisiacs are said to increase libido, potency, and sexual pleasure. Who hasn’t heard that chocolates, strawberries and oysters can have such a powerful effect? Historically, aphrodisiacs have included even quirkier edibles – including the toxic Spanish fly, ground rhinoceros and rare plant extracts. In fact, during research for her book Intercourses, co-author Martha Hopkins found that almost every food has been considered an aphrodisiac at one time. “Historically, foods considered to be aphrodisiacs were hard to find, rare or expensive, like truffles, foie gras and caviar, or shaped like a sex organ,…

Former Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah says there is the need for government to establish a Commission of Inquiry to interrogate the country’s security system. The former CDS, who was speaking on the back of revelations from the Emile Short Commission of Inquiry, noted that there seems to be a lack of proper coordination within the security apparatus of the country; hence it ought to be dealt with to avoid any chaos in future. The Emile Short Commission of Inquiry was set up by government to probe incidents of violence which occurred during the Ayawaso West Wuogon…
Satellite images of a facility near Pyongyang suggest that North Korea may be preparing to launch a missile or a satellite. The increase in activity is around a site known as Sanumdong, where North Korea assembled most of its ballistic missiles and rockets. It comes after reports earlier this week that North Korea’s main rocket launch site at Sohae had been rebuilt. Work to dismantle Sohae began last year but stopped as US talks stalled. On Friday US President Donald Trump said he would be disappointed if North Korea was to resume weapons testing. “I would be surprised in a…
Nigerians are heading to the polls to elect state and local representatives, two weeks after the presidential poll. The exercise will take place in 29 of the country’s 36 states. In oil-rich Nigeria, some state governors control budgets larger than those of neighbouring countries and so these are often keenly contested. President Muhammadu Buhari beat his main rival Atiku Abubakar in the 23 February election, securing a second term. Across the country, Mr Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) got 15.2 million votes while Mr Abubakar’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) received 11.3 million. There are 73 million registered voters. The APC…
The High Commission of Canada in Ghana is set to host an event to celebrate the 2019 International Women’s Day in Takoradi on Saturday, March 9, 2019. Women’s full and equal participation in science and technology as students, influencers, professionals, decision-makers and leaders is important for advancing gender equality in Ghana. While progress has been made in this regard, more remains to be done. In Ghana, the representation of women in many professional sectors, such as coding, mining and welding, remains particularly low. Likewise, in Sub-Saharan Africa, only 30 percent of science and technology graduates are women. This event is…

Government has explained the former bodyguard of President Nana Akufo-Addo who was filmed secretary allegedly training a militia group at the Osu Castle, was illegally using the facility for his personal private business. Minister of Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said Friday that the man, Nana Wireko Addo, was initially given access to the Osu Castle as a member of government task-force assigned to retrieve state vehicles from former government officials. Though he has since August 2018 completed that job, Mr Oppong Nkrumah claimed Nana Wireko Addo unlawfully arrogated the office to himself without recourse to government. He was “assigned an…
