Three top officers accused of misappropriating GH¢480,177.87 of the Endowment Fund of staff of Electoral Commission (EC) have been cleared by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Daily Guide newspaper reports. The US has approved controversial tariffs on imported washing machines and solar panels. The move is in line with President Donald Trump’s “America First” trade policy, which aims to protect local manufacturers from foreign competition. A spokesman said the administration would “always defend American workers, farmers, ranchers and businessmen”. But China and South Korea, whose manufacturers will be most heavily affected, criticised the move. US officials said more trade enforcement actions would follow. Legendary South African trumpeter, composer and singer Hugh Masekela has died at age 78 in Johannesburg. According to a statement released by his family, the trumpeter passed after a battle with prostate cancer. In October 2017, the trumpeter’s team released a statement saying he was battling prostate cancer. The jazz veteran underwent eye surgery in March 2016 after the cancer spread, and had to go into theatre again in September 2016 after another tumour was discovered. The Accra Regional Police Command has denied news making rounds that inmates who escaped from the Kwabenya police station on Sunday dawn have been arrested. “The Accra Regional Police Command is debunking false information making the rounds on social media that ‘all suspects who absconded from lawful custody at the Kwabenya Police Station have surrendered themselves to Madina Police, apart from the Nigerian who was involved in a robbery,’” the police said in a statement. The Bank of Ghana is asking Ghanaians to be wary of Bitcoin, a digital currency largely seen as an alternative currency, because their interest cannot be protected by the bank. The central bank appears to be worried by the high interest some millennial are developing in cryptocurrencies in the country. “The Bank of Ghana wishes to notify the general public that these activities in digital currency are currently not licensed under the Payments System Act 2003 (Act 662),” the bank warned in a statement on Monday. Head of Kwabre East District Security Council,  Nana Osei Assibey Bonsu has ruled out closure of the Gyaama Pensan Senior High Technical School following a riot by students.  He described the protest as worrying after students from two other senior high schools within the same District embarked on similar protest that led to the destruction of school properties. The headmaster of the Breman Edumanu D/A Basic School in the Central Region who absconded after being exposed in a leaked sex tape has been asked to return to post. This has been become necessary to enable the education directorate in the area to resolve the issue surrounding the sex tape and get a proper structure in place to run the school.
