Headmasters facing various sanctions for charging unapproved fees were given lesser punishments than they deserved, the Ghana Education Service assesses its decision. Two senior high schools headmasters have been demoted by the GES and are to go back to the classroom to teach. Seven others have been interdicted. The Ghana Education Service meted out the sanctions after a committee had met the affected heads of schools accused of going contrary to the code of conducts guiding the rollout of the Free SHS Policy. Government absorbed all fees at the secondary school level under the policy for first year students, but…
Is your last post on Facebook going to land you in jail? It might do if it ruins a criminal trial. And the government is now looking for evidence of whether new laws are needed to stop it happening. The Attorney General, the government’s top law officer, is asking judges, police and victims’ groups for examples of where posts, chat and tweets have compromised a trial. So how can a post on social media cause such damage? And what can you do to protect yourself? Well, it’s all down to whether you say something that would influence a jury. Seven…

The Central Bank has said it will welcome mergers among banks that may not individually meet its new capital requirement but cautioned against what it called “disorderly consolidation”. The First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Maxwell Opoku Afari, responding to a question at Parliament’s recent Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting noted that the BoG will be meeting with the banks to begin talks on how to best go about such mergers if the need arises. “Our expectation is that businesses that have been licensed as banks in the country would meet the minimum capital requirement. If by doing…

Tunisia has overturned a law that banned women from marrying non-Muslims. Tunisia is viewed as one of the most progressive Arab countries in terms of women’s rights. The new law comes after President Essebsi pushed for the lifting of the marriage restriction law that was in place in 1973. He argued that it…
