Ghana’s anti-galamsey taskforce has within the last month arrested 294 illegal small scale miners operating in three regions of the country. The illegal miners were arrested in the Eastern, Ashanti and Western regions and the latest arrest on Monday was made up of 22 foreigners- 19 Chinese, one Burkinabe and one Nigerian. This was revealed Tuesday when the inter-ministerial taskforce led by the Defence and the Interior ministers paid a working visit to the taskforce at Tarkwa in the Western Region. A six-week old baby suffering from convulsion has allegedly been left by health officials to die at the Zebilla District Hospital in the Upper East Region because the mother could not afford the cost of a patient folder – GHC10. The baby was sent to the Hospital at about 8:00pm on Monday with a suspected case of convulsion but officials at the Folder Unit of the Hospital demanded she paid GHC10 before a folder could be issued her to see a doctor. The Minority in Parliament is questioning the basis for which the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta gave approval for the Agricultural Development Bank to give a loan of 10,459,500 to a private firm, the MacDan Shipping Company Limited. The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Oxford Business Group (OBG) for its forthcoming publication dubbed: “The Report: Ghana 2018”. Under the MoU, GIPC, a longstanding partner of OBG, would contribute to the Group’s research for the publication. Ecobank Ghana has disengaged 181 outsourced staff as it continues to expand on its digital agenda which seeks to place banking in the hands of its clients. Two men have been arrested in Kumasi for allegedly dealing in fake Ghanaian cedi currency. Police found on them fake currency amounting to GHC14,000 as well as a machine suspected to be used for the production of counterfeit currencies. The amount was GHC10 notes in 14 bundles with each bundle totaling GHC1,000. Their names have been given as Dauda Issah, 31 years, and 30-year-old Osman Issah. Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga has said that he will not take part in the presidential election re-run slated for 17 October “without legal and constitutional guarantees”. But he did not specify exactly what guarantees he wanted. Last week, the Supreme Court annulled August’s election result saying the electoral commission (IEBC) had not followed the constitution. The court said a new election needs to be held by 1 November.
