The Savanna Agricultural Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-SARI) in the Northern Region has launched a Core Of Excellence Initiative to enable SARI increase its production of breeder and foundation seeds to support government’s Planting for Food and Jobs Programme. The $5.5 million paid to SARI in 2015 which is a USAID-sponsored programme through its Feed the Future Initiative was hitherto aimed at improving the infrastructure of the research institute. Legendary Ghanaian high-life musician Paapa Yankson has passed away. Born Benjamin Paapa Kofi Yankson on June 22, 1944 at Winneba, the Tena Me Nky3n composer passed on after an illness, which has kept him in a wheel-chair for the past months. Paapa Yankson has plenty works to his canon spanning close to four decades. Songs of his like Okukuseku, Show Your Love, Wo Yere Anaa Wo Maame and Wiase Mu Nsem became hits when they were released. The General Secretary of the Professional Football Association of Ghana (PFAG), Anthony Baffoe, has admitted that the fight against racism has not been easy. He also believes that the canker will never stop but Blacks need to be respected. The US is to ban its citizens from travelling to North Korea, according to two agencies that operate tours there. Koryo Tours and Young Pioneer Tours said the ban would be announced on 27 July to come into effect 30 days later. They were informed by the Swedish embassy, which conducts US affairs in the country. The US has not yet confirmed the ban but there has been momentum, given the worsening ties and the death of jailed American student Otto Warmbier. Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Charlotte Osei, has rubbished allegations of abuse of office, causing financial loss to the state and breaches of the country’s procurement law leveled against her as totally baseless. Some staff of the Commission have petitioned President Akufo-Addo to cause the Chief Justice, Ms Sophia Akuffo, to initiate impeachment proceedings against Ms Osei. The staff are claiming Ms Osei without recourse to laid down administrative structures and the Public Procurement Act, singularly abrogated contracts, secured a V8 Land Cruiser for her use, and awarded contracts worth thousands of dollars.
