Ghana’s first lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has cut sod for the construction of a 52-bed hostel facility to provide affordable accommodation for child cancer patients and their guardians at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. Mrs Akufo-Addo commended the initiators of the facility, the Ghana Parents Association for Childhood Cancers, the project which she said will bring relief to guardians by reducing cost. Management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi has denied claims that the facility has been hit by oxygen shortage, leading to the death of patients. Although management admits the oxygen plant at the facility is producing below capacity for daily consumption, there are backup arrangements to meet the demands of patients who require oxygen. Britain’s Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson has arrived in Ghana to meet President Nana Akufo-Addo for bilateral talks.
