Disregard injunction on referendum – EC

File picture[/caption] The Electoral Commission is asking Ghanaians to ignore a purported suit at the Human Rights Court, seeking to injunct the impending referendum for the creation of six new regions. The EC has indicated that nothing will stop the referendum from taking place this week. “All arrangements are in place and the referendum will be held as scheduled on Thursday the 27th of December, 2018”, a statement signed by Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, a Deputy Chair at the Commission, confirmed on Monday. Two private individuals, Gabriel Aziaglo and Dan Louis Nikabo in Kadjebi from Kadjebi in the Volta Region went to the court alleging breaches of their fundamental human rights to vote in the referendum as well as illegality on the part of the EC in its implementation of the 2018 regulations on the referendum. One of their concerns was that the EC failed to publish in the gazette the list of the polling stations or places designated as polling stations for the purposes of the referendum. Nonetheless, “The Commission calls on the general public to disregard that information” The Commission therefore called on all eligible voters in the affected areas of Bono East, Ahafo, North East, Savanna, Western North, and Oti to go out in their numbers to cast their votes on Thursday, 27th December, 2018 from 7:00a.m. — 5,00p.m. Meanwhile, in another statement signed by the Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensah said the designated polling stations for the referendum have been gazetted. “This was gazetted on the 12th of December 2018,” the statement said. Also, the Electoral Commission on Monday organised special voting for security personnel and EC officials who will be supervising the referendum on Thursday.
