Members of three teacher unions have been ordered by the High Court in Accra to immediately call off the ongoing strike and return to the classroom.
The order follows an interlocutory injunction filed by the National Labour Commission (NLC) after its attempts to get the teachers to rescind their decision had failed.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers, National Association of Graduate Teachers and Coalition of Concerned Teachers – Ghana, embarked on indefinite strike on Monday following what they said was government’s lack of commitment to pay the remaining salary arrears to some of their members.
A letter dated December 5 from the NLC directing the teachers to rescind their decision to go on strike on Monday, December 9, 2019 was ignored.
As the strike enters day three, the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission, Ofosu Asamoah, was compelled to file an ex-parte motion at the High Court on December 11 to get the teachers to return to the classroom.
The court presided over by Justice Mrs Ananda J. Aikins granted the request on Wednesday.
“It is hereby ordered that the respondents herein, whether by themselves, their executives, officers, members, agents, servants, employees or other persons are to comply with the directives of the National Labour Commission dated 5th December, 2019,” the court said.
It further “ordered that the respondents are restrained from further continuing any strike action”.
The injunction is expected to last for a period of 10 days upon which it may be renewed on notice.
Meanwhile, government through the Finance Ministry has directed the Controller and Accountant-General to release an amount of GHC49,998,626.72 to enable the Ghana Education Service pay outstanding transfer grant and other allowance to qualified staff of GES from 2017 to 2019.
