The Government of Ghana has made a bold move in accordance with the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006, by assuming operational control of the Damang Mine previously operated by Abosso Gold Fields Limited (AGL). This decision comes after AGL’s lease expired on April 18, 2025, and their renewal application was rejected, leading to the suspension of active mining since 2023.
AGL’s shift to processing stockpiles in 2024 and their failure to declare mineral reserves in their renewal application have raised concerns, prompting the Government to step in and ensure that Ghana’s gold reserves benefit its citizens for long-term prosperity.
By taking over the Damang Mine, Ghana is signaling a shift away from automatically renewing mining licenses and towards a more thorough assessment to maximize national benefits. The decision was made based on solid grounds, including AGL’s failure to provide essential technical reports and plans for the mine’s future operations.
The Government reassures that operations at the Damang Mine will continue without interruption, with a focus on local employment and transparency. Stakeholders are urged to cooperate in this transition period, which aims to secure Ghana’s interests while maintaining stability and honoring existing contracts.
Ghana remains open to foreign investment, but commitments to local benefits and sustainability are at the forefront of this strategic decision. The Government seeks collaboration and trust from all parties involved as they navigate this new chapter for the Damang Mine, confident in a brighter and more sustainable future ahead.
