Hundreds of motorbikes without the necessary registration documents were Tuesday seized within the Accra metropolis in a new nationwide exercise by the Ghana Police to end the use of unlicenced motorbikes in the country.

Officers and personnel of the Service were deployed at strategic major roads in Accra, including the N1, Mallam- Kasoa road and Nima, where riders were stopped and their documentations checked.

Those who had the proper documentation and licences were allowed to go while those without had their motorbikes seized and booked for prosecution.

The current nationwide exercise follows a directive from the Police administration to all regional commanders to clamp down on the use of unlicenced motorbikes, which in recent times have been used by criminals to perpetuate crimes.

“It has been observed across the country that large numbers of motorbikes ply our roads without registration number plates,” a memo to all regional police commanders said, adding that similarly, unregistered vehicles ply the road.

It said the unlawful phenomenon was gradually “being accepted as normal and lawful,” hence the directive to all commanders across the country to step in to help stem the practice.

“Inspector General of Police directs all regional commanders to conduct nationwide clampdown on all unregistered motorbikes and vehicles. Those that do not have the proper registration to be impounded and owners prosecuted,” the memo directed.

The memo directed that the order is carried out “with full vigour and must be robust”.
