May 9: Godwin Ablordey, Amankwa Mireku, Adjah Tetteh et al recount chilling moment

It is exactly 18 years today when over 126 football fans lost their lives during a match between rivals Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko on May 9, 2001. The deaths were as a result of a stampede which preceded a controversial match decision taken by the referee on that day. Former Kotoko captain Godwin Ablordey, Hearts’ Adjah Tetteh, Amankwa Mireku, Joe Sam and some footballers who were on the field that day and some fans have been sharing their experience about what they saw and how they felt. Speaking to the media after a commemorative walk in Kumasi last week, they also commended the CEO of Kotoko during the incident Herbert Mensah for his unflinching support over the 18 years as well as companies like Sunda International, Interplast Ghana Ltd, and Conserveria distributors of Gino products. Godwin Ablordey said he still feels sad about what happened on that, noting some people from his base in Madina came to watch and support him and the unfortunate incident happened Lawrence Adja Tetteh recalled telling his wife after the incident that if he had knew the game would end that way he wouldn’t have played the match for Hearts to even sack.
