The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, has cautioned Ghanaians over a statement purported to come from his party as regards the ongoing investigation of the Chair of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) by a Chief Justice-led committee.
Mr Mornah says the PNC has not taken a position on the issue.
Speaking on TV3’s News@10 on Thursday, the PNC National Chairman said the statement issued by the National Treasurer, Akanni Adams, is supposed to be a personal position and not the party’s.
On Thursday, Mr Adams called for the resignation of Charlotte Osei or getting her impeached before the 2020 polls.
He cited how decisions of Mrs Osei prior to the 2016 polls nearly marred the presidential elections and warned that she should not be allowed to stay in office to repeat such decisions.
Removing the Chair of the Commission from office, Mr Adams said on 3FM on Thursday, “will be the best thing that can happen to us ahead of the 2020 elections”.
But Mr Mornah said his party’s treasurer may have taken the decision on the spur of the moment.
The former PNC General Secretary said the party has not met at any point in time to discuss the ongoing impeachment process.
“We have not taken a position,” he insisted.
Mrs Osei is being investigated based on a petition citing her for misappropriation of funds and breach of procurement laws.
Two other commissioners – Georgina Opoku Amankwaa and Dr Amadu Sulley – are also facing impeachment over similar allegations.
