Any given week in the Ghana Women’s Premier League could be tough, especially in the opening weeks of the season as new signings try finding their feet and others already with a flying start. However, Week 2 has some great games to consider.

NORTHERN ZONE

The oldest derby in the league is happening this weekend as Ashtown Ladies host fabulous ladies at the Paa Joe Park on match day 2. Ashtown Ladies have suffered a poor result on the road to Ampem Darkoa Ladies and will be eager to bounce back on home turf. The story is not different either for fabulous ladies at home after losing heavily to Pearl Pia Ladies. Regardless of the poor start for both sides, old time rivalry will rekindle, both teams will try to prove superiority over each other but that notwithstanding, it is also an opportunity for both teams to get back to winning ways.

26th January, 2020 Kickoff 3:00pm

Venue: Paa Joe park – Kumasi

Ampem Darkoa Ladies went rampant on match day 1 with a 5-goal mauling of Ashtown Ladies as the team appears to be in imperious form, and look well set to make a solid defence of their title once more.  Northern Ladies did not have a bright start to their campaign after sharing spoils with Kumasi sports Academy at home. Regardless, the team will be looking forward to rewrite the script away from home. Meetings between both sides usually had been tough, energy sapping and producing virtually some narrow results. Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah will headline the “Nanamma” squad while Jafar Rahama leads “the pride of the North” side. Spectating has always been on point at the Ohene Ameyaw Park and the host will be looking to use that home atmosphere to their advantage.

With some exciting attacking football display, Kumasi Sports Academy (KUSA) travelled to the North and brought home a point in their season opener. Their comeback draw will lift the confidence level of the Ladies heading into Match day 2. Similarly, Prisons Ladies picked up a good result against Supreme ladies and they look to have a well-balanced Squad. Captain, Naomi Animah will lead her charges at home while  Captain Rita Okyere leads the visitors. This could be a highly entertaining encounter between two good sides that could well end up honours even.

Pearl Pia Ladies will sit at home with much confidence after grabbing 3 points from Fabulous Ladies in Kumasi. Heading into match day 2, the team look to be carrying a significant goals threat to their opponent. Supreme Ladies do not look a settled side but with such young squad they could come good as the season progresses. Losing in their season opener appears to sink the side even more and Coach Joyce Boatey-Agyei will have to work magic to turn things around for her side.

A highly entertaining game is expected as one of the two teams play on the front foot and goals look guaranteed.

SOUTHERN ZONE

Douglas Nii Addy will be looking for his first win of the season as his His Immigrations Ladies’ side journey to the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium to face Lady Strikers FC. Both teams made a somewhat shaky start to the season by losing in the opening game. The performance of Lady Strikers FC over the weekend do not depict a side that is well prepared for the season but has home advantage in match day 2 whereas Immigrations Ladies put up some great performance and were just not able to found the back of the net. A game of equals it seems to be and the side who makes the most of their chance could be smiling home with 3points.

A final before the final game is expected to be served at the McDan La Town Park on Saturday as Police Ladies host Hasaacas Ladies on match day 2. The host started on a high note by thrashing LadyStrikers in a 4-1 thriller and will be looking to kick on from that emphatic win.  For the visitors, match day 1 has been a challenge – a not expected result against Samaria Ladies and are looking forward to make Amends. This particular game has cluster of national team players for both side. Key players to note for Police ladies are the likes of Grace Anima, Deborah Afriyie, Philicity Asuako while Hasaacas will be presenting Evelyn Badu, Janet Egyir, Perpetual Agyekum among others.

After snatching a crucial away victory on the road in match day 1, Samaria Ladies look poised for match day 2 at home, McDan La Town Park but against a rugged Halifax Ladies side. The visitors picked up a point at the dreaded Nduom Sports Stadium on match day 1 in a 2-2 drawn game. No doubt coach Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo’s side had to be more tactical to arrive at such a result looking at the strength of Sea Lions at home. Match day 2 Promises to be even more exciting as both teams would want to keep the momentum. Constance Serwaa Agyemang, “the little turf Queen” will be in her elements for Halifax Ladies whereas Leticia Adjei leads the rejuvenated “Omanjor” Lads.

Soccer Intellectuals take on Sea Lions FC at the Adu Yaw Assasan Park- Ajumako as they look to build on last weekend’s win over Immigrations Ladies. Coach Selassie Pentem has earlier added some youthful exuberance to his squad and they look like playing some entertaining football this term. Sea Lions Ladies meanwhile drew their their first game of the season at home to Halifax Ladies and will be eager to bounce back. The back line of the host looks watertight with the likes of Linda Amoako and Linda Addai with speedster Matilda Damoah and Mary Essiful on the wings while the visitors are likely to parade the likes of Cecelia Hagan, Anastasia Achiaa and Elizabeth Owusuaa. A sumptuous fixture already?
