A former Director General of the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, COP (rtd) Bright Oduro, has backed calls for an independent body to be a check on the Service.
He opined that that will shore up the confidence of the public in the Service.
For him, many see the Service as partial particularly over issues that have to do with its own.It is said to shield offending officers.
COP (rtd) Oduro made these observations on TV3’s Hot Issues on Saturday, September 21.
He disclosed that the Service cannot be rid of politics as most of the promotions from Assistant Commissioner of Police to the Inspector-General of Police are all political.
“[This is] because it is the president who approves finally and the recommendations are made by the Police Council.”
He said the top echelon of the Service “is more or less political than administrative”.
‘Tiwaa has been lucky!’
COP (rtd) Oduro was relieved of his position in 2017 under controversial circumstances with many imputing politics to it.
His place was taken by Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, who was the an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
But within a year and a few months, she was promoted to a Commissioner of Police after being made a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP).
“She has been lucky to have promotion within one year, four months,” he noted, stating that this has happened only once in his lifetime as a senior police officer.
He, nonetheless, backed the current CID boss to do a good job and also commended his mate, James Oppong-Boanuh, who is also the current IGP for his tackling of the Takoradi girls’ case.
