The six-month suspension handed Member of Parliament for Tema West, Carlos Ahenkorah, by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) for allegedly impeding the execution of a decision by the assembly is to be lifted.
The Assembly per a resolution passed Wednesday, suspended the MP after he was accused of obstructing officials of the assembly from carrying out a demolition exercise in the metropolis.
Some local governance expected have criticised the suspension on grounds that due process was not followed.
A statement issued Thursday and signed by the Chief Executive of the Assembly Felix Mensah Nii Anang and the Presiding Member Richard Fiadomor, said “in the spirit of unity and development” the suspension would be reviewed.
It admitted that the MP was not given a fair hearing as natural justice demands before he was suspended as a member of the Assembly.
Realising that, the statement said leadership of the Assembly on that same Wednesday held another emergency meeting at which it was agreed that a meeting be scheduled to “reconsider their earlier decision” suspending the MP.
Background
Mr Ahenkorah was said to have on August 31, 2017 stormed the Cocoa Village at Tema Community 2 where some officials of the Assembly were demolishing unauthorised structures, to stop the exercise.
He reportedly attacked an engineer of the Assembly in the process of confusion.
The Assembly members were not happy about the action of Mr Ahenkorah. He was reported to the Public Relations and Complaints Committee of the Assembly and a meeting convened to discuss his conduct.
At the said meeting, a motion was moved for his suspension and same was upheld by the Assembly in the absence of the Chief Executive and the MP.
