Thousands of Ghanaians benefitted from a charitable work undertaken by businessman Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, on Sunday.

The Ghanaian billionaire toured some parts of Accra and distributed bags of rice, water, bottles of oil among other things to persons with disabilities, widows and the less privileged.

The exercise, which took place ahead of the lockdown, saw visits to the Black Star Square, Jamestown and some parts of Dansoman.

Cheddar told the press that his gesture was motivated by his desire to help the beneficiaries cope with the lockdown that bars them from doing things that earn them little income.

Preaching washing hands with soap and water, social distancing and staying home, the business mogul said he was optimistic of Ghana’s chances of arresting the virus.

He expressed belief in the measures put in place by the government and was convinced that Ghana will sail through the storm successfully with God on its side.

“We are Ghanaians, Africans, black people and we are not that rich like other nations. I know some people will find it very hard to eat and drink so I decided to come to the streets to the less privileged areas to share my little with those who don’t have food and money to sustain the next two weeks.

“I share and understand their pain and I pray that God will not let this disease overtake our country. I pray that in the next two weeks everybody gets something to eat. The disabled, abled, the ones without money and without money, I pray for everyone. It’s the first time we are all going through this in the world and I’m here to be with them. I believe that the government, with our support will defeat this enemy,” he said.

The lockdown of some parts of the country began Monday, March 30 with general reports of compliance to the directive.

To help the state mitigate the impact of the virus on the social and economic well-being of Ghanaians, the government has set up a fund for that purpose.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who donated his three-month salary to the fund, is appealing to everyone to contribute their widow’s mite to the fund.

President Akufo-Addo also urged benevolent Ghanaians and institutions to help the needy and alleviate them of the burden that the pandemic comes with.
