Calls for heads to roll in PDS scandal ‘premature’ – PUWU boss

[L-R] Paa Kwesi Asare interviewing Mr Amewu who laughed out calls for his resignation as Energy Minister
The General Secretary of the Public Utility Workers’ Union (PUWU), Michael Adumatta Nyantekyi, has opposed calls for the dismissal or resignation of individuals whose actions or inactions led to the suspension of the ECG-PDS concession agreement.

Mr. Nyantekyi is of the view that it is early days yet to call for heads to roll since the subject matter of the suspension of the agreement is under investigations.

Government Tuesday announced the suspension of the agreement which was in its fifth month of execution since PDS took over the distribution of electricity from ECG in March 2019.

A statement from the government cited “the detection of fundamental and material breaches of PDS’ obligation in the provision of Payment Securities” as the cause.

According to the government some documents used in brokering the deal were fraudulent, something the Energy Minister, Peter Amewu confirmed in  an exclusive interview with TV3, adding the officials involved had been suspended.

But pressure started mounting on some government officials and officials of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) to resign or be sacked.

While others, including the NDC are calling for the head of the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and Energy Minister, Peter Amewu, African Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) is calling for the heads of the MiDA bosses.

However, speaking on TV3’s Saturday news analysis show, The Key Points, the PUWU boss said there was the need to exercise restraint and dig deep into the matters first.

“I think the call for people to resign at this stage is too premature, and again just like this whole process, right from 2014 everything is being done with a rush. We need to take our time and do things properly, get to the bottom of the issue”, he said

Even though he says “MiDA must not be left the hook” in the full-scale investigation, Mr. Nyantekyi noted the possibility of all parties coming out clean by close of investigations.

“For all you know, at the end of the day we will only come to realise this is all I do about nothing”, he noted.

Meanwhile, energy expert and consultant, Kwame Jantuah also conceded “we haven’t got to the point of sacking anybody, we have got to the point of finding out the veracity of payments by PDS”.
