The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Ghana Road Transport Co-ordinating Council (GRTCC) have commended government for reducing the regulatory margin on diesel by GH¢2.00 per litre, and have announced that transport fares will remain unchanged across all routes until further notice.
In a joint press release signed by their General Secretaries – Godfred Abulbire of GPRTU and Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah of GRTCC – the unions thanked the Government of Ghana, under President John Dramani Mahama, for the intervention, which took effect on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, for a period of one month.
The statement said the leadership of the two bodies had engaged the sector Minister prior to the reduction, presenting the case for drivers and calling for urgent relief.
They said they were “happy that those engagements yielded results,” and urged government to extend the current window beyond one month should oil prices continue to rise.
Following consultations with their national executives and stakeholders, the unions announced that transport fares will remain unchanged across all routes until further notice.
They called on all drivers, station masters, and branch executives to strictly observe the approved fare structure, warning that no additional charges outside the official fare table would be permitted.
Commuters made to pay above the approved fare have been advised to report the matter immediately to the nearest union office for prompt redress.
