The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Council has appointed Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah as its new Vice-Chancellor. He takes over from Professor Jerry Samuel Yao Kuma, whose term of office ends on October 15, 2020. Until he was appointed the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amankwah was the Dean, Faculty of Integrated Management Science of the University. His term will run from October 16, 2020, to July 31, 2024. South Africa’s president has said coronavirus infections appear to have peaked in the country, as he announced a sweeping relaxation of lockdown measures. President Cyril Ramaphosa said nearly all restrictions on the country’s economy will be eased from Monday. A controversial ban on the sale of alcohol and tobacco will be lifted. Tension is mounting in Koforidua, the Eastern Region capital, between members of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA) and Nigerians retailers. Members of the Union are agitating over influx of foreigners mostly Nigerians in retail business, contrary to the laws of Ghana. The local GUTA Chapter has, therefore, issued an ultimatum to the foreign retailers, demanding closure of all retail shops of the Nigerians, in particular, by August 31, 2020. The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency has set up a disaster recovery fund for victims of Friday night’s fire at ‘Kiosks Estate’ near Shiashie in Accra. The fire ravaged stores and make-shift structures, rendering hundreds, mostly squatters, homeless. The cause of the fire is not yet known but many suspect it was as a result of a gas explosion. The total number of recoveries-cum-discharges of coronavirus cases in Ghana has gone past 40,000. The latest update by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) released on its website on Saturday, August 15 puts the number at 40,147. This has also seen a further reduction in the active cases. From 1,839, the active cases have reduced by seven. The deaths, however, remain same as was reported on Friday, August 14 – 231.
