Japan’s Emperor Naruhito has expressed “deep remorse” over his country’s actions during World War Two, on the 75th anniversary of its surrender. “I earnestly hope that the ravages of war will never again be repeated,” he said at a ceremony on Saturday. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promised to “never repeat the tragedy”. The PM marked the occasion by sending an offering to a controversial war shrine in Tokyo, but did not visit in person. However, four ministers did visit the Yasukuni Shrine, in a move that is likely to anger China and South Korea. It is the first time…
A slum near the Miklin Hotel at Shiashie, East Legon in Accra was on Friday night razed down by fire. The fire is said to have swept through the make-shift structures, which have cultivated the name ‘Kiosks Estate’ for the area. About hundreds of structures were burnt to ashes. The fire is said to have started around 8:00pm but efforts to reach personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) immediately proved futile. However, after hours when they got to the scene, the fire officers were unable to easily navigate their way through as a result of the poor situation…
Despite a further reduction in Ghana’s Covid-19 active cases, eight lives have, however, become the latest casualties to the virus. This was captured in the latest case count released by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Friday, August 14. The active cases went from 1,906 to 1,839. This was significantly due to the total number of recoveries-cum-discharges recorded. That number has moved up to 39,993 currently. But the deaths rose from 223 to 231. With a total of 216 new cases recorded, the country’s total cumulative cases reached 42,063, from Thursday, March 12, 2020 when the first two index cases…
Bayern Munich sent out an emphatic and ominous message to their Champions League rivals with an absolute demolition of fellow European heavyweights Barcelona in a gloriously chaotic and utterly one-sided quarter-final tie in Lisbon. The high-pressing, energetic and ruthless German champions were on a different level to their Spanish rivals, as they have been for pretty much every opponent they have faced in Europe this season and in every competition since football restarted in June. They scored four times in the first half, added another quartet in the second, and could easily have netted more against a shell-shocked and shambolic…
The Campaign Manager of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2020 elections, Professor Joshua Alabi, is urging groups and institutions to speak up against wrongs in society, regardless of which party is in power. Prof Alabi says wrongs thrive when right-thinking people remain silent on issues that question and undermine the collective good of the people. He is therefore calling on Ghanaians to let their voices be heard, especially on governance and politics, in the run-up to election 2020. Prof Alabi was speaking at a meeting between Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) and the flagbearer of…
The National Women’s Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Madam Kate Gyamfua, has criticized the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for always making a replica of her party’s manifesto promises. Kate Gyamfua claims NDC over the years has copied and pilfered policies and ideologies of NPP hence their lackadaisical attitude of constantly allowing NPP to launch their manifesto first. The NPP Women’s Organizer, in an interview on the Yensempa morning show on Onua FM on Friday, August 14, asserted NDC lacks vision and ideologies to woo electorates that is why even in opposition they are struggling to launch…

Arsenal have signed Brazil midfielder Willian on a three-year deal after the 32-year-old’s contract with Chelsea expired. The Blues had offered the player a new deal but were unwilling to match what the Gunners had on the table. “I believe he’s a player that can really make a difference for us,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta. “We had a clear intention to strengthen in the attacking midfielder and the winger positions.” Willian made 339 appearances for Chelsea after signing from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala for £30m in 2013. He won five major honours with the Blues, including two Premier League…
